Social Studies/Arts & Crafts: Communities

Create a neighborhood for your Community unit using two-by-fours, collage materials, sharpie pens and the always amazing Mod Podge!  Have Home Depot cut the two-by-fours into 10" 8" and 6" blocks.  Using a jigsaw cut the roof tops of each block in a triangular fashion - no need to do it perfectly, that just adds to the charm. I had a craft shop cut the roofs because I don't have a jigsaw so know that a poorly equipped home "shop" is no excuse to skip this project.

Students sand the house shaped blocks (best to do this outside!) and then add coat of gesso to act as a primer.  Next students paint the primed blocks with acrylic craft paint - any color or colors are acceptable.  These painted house shapes now become the canvas for student creativity.

After the paint dries students rip, cut and place magazines pictures, interesting scrapbook paper shapes or leftover tissue paper on the painted houses using Mod Podge.

Details can be added with Sharpie markers.  You can draw right over the dried Mod Podge and it looks fantastic.
